The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) is a high school competition involving multiple examinations (both written and experimental) of an examinee’s chemistry skills. To select a team of 4 students to represent the United States, students complete a three-part national exam: 60 multiple-choice questions, eight problem-solving questions, and a lab practical involving two experiments. The lab practical portion of the exam will test the examinees’ problem-solving and experimental design abilities in the laboratory. I developed three potential experimental prompts for the lab portion of future national exams. Because these experiments are short prompts that give little to no instruction, they will test the student’s chemical knowledge, ability to problem-solve, and ability to plan and conduct experiments solving the prompts. Due to the confidentiality of the exam and to reduce the risk of cheating, my presentation will focus on the International Chemistry Olympiad, how it is administered, and the process I utilized to develop novel and appropriate prompts.
