Conservationists of Color Abstract

Environmentalism has been a field historically dominated by upper- and middle- class White men as a result of racism, sexism, and other inequities. Harmful stereotypes arose from decades of segregation and inaccessibility that environmentalism isn’t something that people of color care about. These misconceptions are not only false, but now serve as roadblocks that people of color must navigate to enter the field of environmental conservation. This project celebrates and explores the life and accomplishments of numerous conservationists and environmentalists of minority races. The contributions of these trailblazing men and women are just as diverse as their backgrounds. From grassroots political rallying to permanently changing the standard of stewardship of the National Parks, these conservationists have changed the field without the praise and recognition they may have gotten had they been White.
